The downside of being limited to gluten free products is that these items usually cost more than their gluten included counterparts and can only be found in specialty grocery stores such as Whole Foods and Sprouts or online through such sites as Amazon.
The IRS does offer a deduction for gluten free products but not many people can take advantage of it. In order to utilize this deduction one must have been diagnosed with Celiac Spruce disease and needs to document the fact. People who are merely gluten intolerant cannot take advantage of this deduction. Further the record keeping is painstaking, you must list the prices of gluten-free foods compared to those of regular foods. The difference between those prices is tax-deductible.
The deduction is considered a “medical expense” and out-of-pocket medical expenses are only deductible once they exceed 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). So, if your AGI is $50,000, you can only deduct the out-of-pocket medical expenses that exceed $3,750.
The rule of thumb when it comes to shopping gluten free is, READ ALL INGREDIENTS. Oftentimes people who are gluten intolerant are also allergic to other ingredients such as corn and soy.
An example of this is Glutino’s Gluten Free Bread Crumbs. The product does contain milled corn therefore it may present a problem to those allergic to corn.
Ian’s gluten free Japanese style panko bread crumbs are actually safe for those who have allergies to corn.
I recently used it in preparing a Tilapia dish and did not have a reaction. The product does not contain any corn starch.
SO Delicious offers a dairy free, gluten free ice cream made with coconut milk. The texture is more like a sorbet than ice cream and there is a noticeable coconut aftertaste which isn’t so bad with the chocolate flavor but with the mint chocolate chip flavor seems a bit odd.
If you are following The Blood Type Diet, to help reduce inflamation in your body, be careful as you may have to avoid coconut.
Rice Dream gluten free, non dairy ice cream is considerably better. Creamy texture and no aftertaste. However, it is a bit bland.
Finally! A good tasting gluten free ice cream! Almond Dream is made from almond milk and there is no nasty aftertaste as with the other gluten free ice cream products out on the market!
Breakfast on the go? No problem, Glutino’s has gluten free breakfast bars with several fruit fillings. Each bar has 140 calories.
Udi’s makes a frozen gluten free pizza crust that comes out like crispy NY style pizza. If you are allergic to tomatoes, substitute basil pesta sauce.
Kikkoman makes a gluten free soy sauce and teriyaki sauce which are both pretty good. You can go directly to the Kikkoman web page to find where these products are sold.
Udi’s is by far my favorite dedicated gluten free bakery. Their gluten free double chocolate muffins are moist and delicious but beware of the calories!
Simply Organic makes a gluten free banana bread mix which is very easy to use and the banana cake comes out moist and delicious. Suggestion, use 2% milk instead of water.
Arrowhead Mills cake mixes are wonderful! I couldn’t believe how moist and flavorful the cake was given that it was gluten free.
Not all gluten free products are palatable. Bread For Life’s White Rice Bread happens to be one of those products. Standup comedian John Pinette once said, “Gluten free bread does not toast, it absorbs heat like a space shuttle tile.” He was absolutely correct when it comes to this brand of gluten free bread!
Sometimes it is frustrating when I can’t find my preferred brand of GF foods in stock because as it stands, the demand for GF foods is still not at a level that makes it profitable for grocers to stock in large quantities. However, I did find that Rudi’s Gluten Free is pretty good and comes close to my preferred brand, Udi’s.
Good news for those that love cream topping, Cool Whip is gluten free!
