New Gluten Free Products: Del Real Gluten Free Mexican Cuisine

1I am not a big advocate of gluten-free products but I am still on the lookout for new products available out in the market to share with those who follow my blog and may be interested in them.

I recently came across the Del Real line of gluten-free Mexican dishes ( at my local grocery story and thought I would share my finding with you. According to the corporate web site, the company was started by the Cardenas family who emigrated to the U.S. from central Mexico in the 1970s. They are based in Mira Loma, California and their facility is SQF Certified. (Del Real Foods has SQF Level 2 Certification.)

The Safe Quality Foods Program (SQF) is recognized by retailers and food service providers around the world that require a rigorous, credible food safety management system. It was launched in Australia in 1994. Since 2004, it has been administered by the SQF Institute, a division of the Food Marketing Institute, headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. Thousands of companies in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, and in Asia have received SQF certification.

Del Real Foods states that they are focused on “creating great tasting, authentic Mexican meals that are safe and healthier, with no preservatives.” They distribute their cuisine to nearly all food markets including restaurants, grocery store delis, club stores and retail stores. I am gluten intolerant and recently purchased some of your Tamales which said that they were wheat 2gluten free. Is your machinery sanitized to prevent cross contamination with ingredients that may include wheat? Yes, we wash and sanitize our production lines before production.

Your Chicken Tamales contain food starch. What type of starch is used? The Chicken Tamales contain corn starch. Del Real Foods tries to avoid any wheat or any other allergen ingredient in our products.

Are all your products gluten-free including the cheese? All of our tamales are wheat gluten free.

What type of Lard is used in the meat Tamales?Refined pork lard is used in all our meat Tamales.
